Tamia Andrews, daughter of Local 1746 Member, Tiarra Andrews, wins Council 8 $10K Scholarship.

Tamia Andrews, daughter of Local 1746 Member, Tiarra Andrews, was awarded $10,000 over four years towards her higher education through the Peggy McClain scholarship fund. Tamia will be attending The University of Cincinnati pursuing an education in either physical or occupational therapy.

My mom’s work experience in AFSCME through her employment at Cuyahoga County Job & Family Services, as I grew up, has allowed me to see the difference AFSCME makes in my life. To me, AFSCME is more than an organization; it is more than a name. AFSCME symbolizes the support system that allows my mom to engage in work that matters to her and her ability to take care of my family as well. As I witness how my mom balances her work in public service and her role as a member of AFSCME, I understand work, responsibility, and community in work differently. People she serves are experiencing some of the toughest times of their lives. They may be facing unemployment, housing insecurity, and food insecurity. Through my mom’s work experience, I understand that public service work cannot always be easy; however, this work is always necessary.” TAMIA ANDREWS
